(no subject)

Okay, so I'm planning on spending a lot of time away from the internet this summer - camping and the creek and whatever. And I am heading to both the used book store and the library this weekend, so I need book recs. I already have a list of books I want to read, but if there is something you think should be on my MUST READ list, please tell me in comments? Any type/genre/whatever, just book recs. Thanks! <3

I read a fascinating book called "Alice I Have Been". It's a fictionalized novel about the girl Lewis Carrol wrote Alice in Wonderland for.

I will add that to my list :)

Do you like Dean Koontz? Anything by him is excellent (though sometimes twisted and usually featuring a dog) but I think my favorite is Strangers. Kind of out there with the plot but the relationships he builds are A++.

Or if you're in a sci-fi/fantasy kind of mood, you can try Ender's Game.

Oooh or anything by Chaim Potok, but especially My Name Is Asher Lev and it's sequels.

Ever read any Anne McCaffrey? I love the Pern series.

... I'll stop rambling now.

STRANGERS IS TOTALLY MY FAVORITE DEAN KOONTZ! :)

I have had Ender's Game on my list for a while and haven't read it, so I will check. I have not read either of the other authors, so they can go on my list to check for at the used book store. Thanks! <3

I KNEW I LIKED YOU FOR A REASON. YOUR TASTE IS GOOD AND YOU SHOULD FEEL GOOD.

The thing is, my mind is a sieve these days and I don't even remember what Ender's Game is about. But I do remember being blown away by it. I know you'll enjoy it.

Black Jewels Trilogy by Anne Bishop - amazing books! They're classed as a romance/fantasy - but they're very dark and entertaining. Absolutely adore them!!!

Otherwise I stronge suggest anything by Maureen McCarthy :-)

Anything by Judith Merkle Riley, but especially The Oracle Glass and The Serpent Garden.

cool, I'll add that to my list :)

A tumblr picture that [livejournal.com profile] apiphile made into an icon! I have it saved somewhere on my harddrive but I'm using it as a bribe to get [livejournal.com profile] strangecreature onto aim.

I like it. :) [livejournal.com profile] apiphile makes a ton of icons I like, and I always steal them but never actually upload them to use b/c I fail at the internet, lol.

I <3 used bookstores, especially mom-and-pop used bookstores. It was the first job I ever held never mind the fact that it went out of business barely a year or two after i left .

I have a hard time recommending books- I read according to how I'm feeling for the day. Fun Reads:

Janet Evanovich's number series "One for the Money", "Two for the Dough"...etc. #1 is pretty rockin'.

Anything Mercedes Lackey, particularly her Elemental or Valdemar serieses. Look for "The Fire Rose" or "To Take a Thief"!!

And any time I enter a used bookstore, I look for the out-of-print L.J Smith's "A Dangerous Game". I read it once while it was at my bookstore- then I recommended it to a customer and have never found a copy again!

Oops. Did I say "The Dangerous Game"? I meant "The Forbidden Game". It's actually a collection of three short- The Hunter, The Chase, and The Kill. Good luck finding it though.

The Hunter, The Chase, The Kill. A review.

"It's the sort of story that if made into a TV series now, would probably be a big hit. Actually, practically all of L.J. Smith's stories are those kind of stories. Yeah, yeah, very commercial fiction, they are. Probably would be junk food, if the classics are full-course meals. But these are GOOD junk food!"

thank you! I will keep an eye out for it!

I have a few Mercedes Lackey books, and I'm pretty sure she's in a couple of my compilation books. I may pick up something else by her. :)

Books! \o/

Well, to start, since you're into GK now (wooooo!), you should definitely read One Bullet Away by Nate Fick. I haven't read it myself yet, but by all accounts it's great. Same deal with the book Generation Kill itself.

My favorite author, and the one I always rec when anyone asks, is Guy Gavriel Kay. He writes historical fantasy and is basically a class unto himself. My favorite book of his is A Song for Arbonne, which is based on medieval France, and another favorite is the Lions of Al-Rassan (medieval Spain and the clash between the Christians, Muslims, and Jews). The Sarantine Mosaic (two books: Sailing to Sarantium and Lord of Emperors) is an amazing examination of Byzantium. The Fionavar Tapestry is more completely fantasy. Basically ALL of his books are worth a read, and sadly there aren't many of them since he's quite slow (due to having to thoroughly research a historical period before he can write!).

If you haven't read The Lovely Bones, I think you should - I picked it up while I was in Dublin and it rather astonished me. I usually eschew best sellers, but it was excellent.

Yay books!

One Bullet Away is already on my list, lol.

I have never even heard of Guy Gavriel Kay, so I definitely check those out! Thank you!
