Jul. 8th, 2007 10:23 pmTonight was the last night of the fair and Harley went with our cousin Hallie & my uncle Mike. Harley & Hallie were waiting in line for one of the rides and there were two guys behind them and apparently these two guys saw Uncle Mike watching Harley & Hallie and thought he was some pervy old man and went and got a cop. After the fact, it's an amusing story. Also, I like the idea that there are people who actually do look out for other people, because those guys really could've just ignored the whole situation. But there are a lot of weirdos out there, and given the number of people that come to the fair, I'm sure there are quite a few there.
Book 7. I'm really excited about it, but I know I'm gonna be disappointed so I'm trying not to get too hyped up about it. For any of you that don't know this, I never finished reading HBP. I hated it. I thought it read like bad fanfic and I know that several of us jokingly discussed sending JKR a letter about it, things like using "site" instead of "sight" in the first chapter (or something; it's been two years) and Hermione seeming OOC, which was pretty damned hard since what JKR writes is canon. I also didn't like the transition away from just Harry's POV, b/c that's pretty much all we've seen up until that point. And I think fanfic had ruined me by that point anyways. Also, when HBP came out, I remember talking to
snarkyroxy on MSN messenger & she got the book hours before we did b/c she's in Australia and since she and I had already seen the spoilers, she checked that first and said it was true, and then she was texting me as she was reading. When I read it, I think I stopped right around Christmas. In the book, I mean. Later, I did go back and reread the bathroom scene w/ Harry & Draco and the scene in the cave, but in both those instances it was b/c of something I was betaing.
I'm hoping I'll like Book 7 better.
Either way, though, I'm kinda saddened by the prospect of the end, y'know. I mean, we'll always have fanfic and can create whatever we want out of that, but there's the point that we'll finally know how JKR believes Harry defeats Voldemort (maybe). When I write, I personally usually skip over that, and just assume Harry did it and leave out the details, but I love the million different ideas that fanfic authors have come up with for defeating Voldie. And even though we can all create AUs with our own versions, it won't be the same. Anyone else feel that way?
Ohh, one more thing related to RL. Harley goes to Camp Bethel every summer. It's a church camp that runs for like 10 weeks, with different activities every week. This week she and Hallie aren't going together, b/c Hallie went for rockclimbing or something last week and Harley's going for white water rafting in August. But apparently at camp, no one is allowed to use "the M-word". Magic. Because parents (like those who think Harry Potter turns kids into Satanists or whatever the hell they think) are offended by it and think that we shouldn't be implying that magic surpasses God or something. Which is silly, of course, and the pastors & youth directors at our church and two of our sister churches think it's silly, b/c it's fiction anyways and it's about good vs evil and other lessons children need to be taught (like getting all the facts before jumping to conclusions, maybe) or whatever. So Uncle Mike & Uncle Billy (who is actually one of the pastors) told Harley she should wear Harry Potter shirts all week while she's at camp and talk along either a couple of the HP books or a couple of the Dresden books and go around singing "Do You Believe in Magic" all week.
My family is having a get-together at one of the local parks this coming Saturday, and going to an Avalanche game afterward. Everyone's invited. Y'know, if you suddenly find yourself in the middle of bumfuck VA. *g*
