I was working on Sam's birthday ficlet and I started to write "On his 16th birthday, Sam aced his Practical Law test and scored a date with the cute blonde from his Spanish class." Which made me actually start thinking about Practical Law. Did anyone else take Practical Law in high school? For us, it was reserved for juniors and seniors (I took it my junior year) and I don't remember hardly anything out of the class (other than the day Mr Robinson walked into the middle of class while miss Newell was teaching, kissed her, and walked back out) except for Drug Wars. Which was the most hilarous two weeks of school that year. We were all given envelopes with a role and props, dividing us into 3 groups: buyers, dealers, and cops. And we had to figure out who was who, and the dealers/buyers had to make drug deals (with Monopoly money & Smarties!) and the cops had to figure out who was buying/dealing and bust them. This was all background to all our other classes, and we all had so much fun because we had this little secret club thing going on. I dunno, I just found it amusing to remember. *g*

My boys are laying under the back porch swing scheming something. Gotta go sneak up on them and find out what.

ETA: Oh, my boys. I went to sit out front and the boys came running around the corner. They each had a wiffle bat pretending it was a shotgun, and I heard Davey say something about some ghosts are good, but these are bad ghosts. I asked them if they were playing Dean and Sam (which I already knew) and Ronnie said he was Dean (which I also knew), but then Davey says, "I'm Sam, the vision guy. Dean is the goober guy."

Now, they have the camp chairs set up in the front yard (y'know how you used to line up the dining room chairs when you were little to make a train? same kidna thing) and it's the Impala. Except I'm apparently sitting in the trunk, b/c I'm stretched out on the couch (like a campchair but it seats three) behind their seats, and they keep tossing their "guns" on me.

I think they watch too much TV.

We had "Civics" in our senior year (in PA).

We had civics in... ninth for advanced (which I was) and tenth for regular classes. Practical Law was actually an elective.

I didn't know you were from / lived in PA.

Love, love, love, love, love!

Oh, <3 a class like that. Sounds like a lot of fun ... I always loved a teacher that could come up with some engaging activity like that.

LOL. Maybe too much TV, but at least they're actively playing too!

I was lucky in h.s. and had great teachers who did a lot of activities like that (my biology class, once every six weeks, we'd spend the day at a local park, studying the animals/wildlife/pH levels of the creek/etc and how they changed over the school year) but most of them are retired now. Several took early retirement b/c they hated the idea of SoLS and having to teach to a certain standard.

And they are VERY active little boys. I'd love to have half their energy.

I had a couple of those in middle school, but I wasn't that lucky in HS. Sigh, unfortunately. I hate the way school systems in the States work, for the most part ...

Hehe. Could use some of that energy right now, myself. Stupid essay ....

haha, you're still procrastinating on that essay?

And I can relate about the schools systems. Luckily the schools here in Salem are really good, which is why I wanna make sure my boys stay here.

Well, I've got two full pages so far, which is a good fourth of it. But I'm not enjoying it very much at all.

That is great. If I had to choose a place in this area, I'd go for the Oak Ridge area (rich, smart school system). I have no idea where I'll end up when school ends, though.

it'd probably be worth it if it got you to the end of your essay...

I had no Practical Law class!

And HEE. My kid makes a Sam!face to die for. And the other day we were watching Eragon (I know, I know, bleh, but The Kid loves it) and he turned to me and said, "You know what they need for that guy? *points at the Shade* A shotgun full of rock salt."

From: [identity profile] why-me-why-not.livejournal.com
My kids didn't like Eragon at all; we tried to watch it and it really couldn't catch/hold their attention. (even though they've seen all the LotR movies and Ronnie knows what scenes are on which disk of the EE sets)

And that's cute! Kids are the best, huh? ;)

Oh Tabby your kids crack me up! I called my friend Ashley to tell her the story because I knew she'd crack up. She came over and spent the night last night and we were up til 3:30 watching Season Two. She cracked up at the clowns. I still think they're wicked scary.

The clowns are scary!!

Dave & I rewatched the last episode this morning while we were being lazy. (and it brought up questions about my dad, b/c this last time he was in prison we used to take the kids to see him and they thought that was his house & all the other people there were his friends.)

I think you pretty much have the cutest kids ever.

I never had Practical Law but I wish I had! I wanna be a drug dealer! *pouts*

Well, thank you! They do have their moments!

I was a drug dealer and my friend Sam was a cop, which was funny b/c in RL I was the good kid and she was a druggie. Go figure.

yeah, but not by Sam. One of my friends that wasn't in PL with us busted me out in Latin class & this guy Rhett was a cop & got me.

Bummer! Did you try to bribe them? Or is the game over once you get caught?

Date: 2007-05-02 02:21 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] why-me-why-not.livejournal.com
well, once you're caught you're pretty much caught. but that was okay. And I don't think I could've bribed Rhett, but it had been Burke, I so could've.

I never had a practical law class. I had a semester of Economics and a semester of Government, but they weren't very interesting and I don't remember learning anything other than the three branches and checks and balances.

And your kids are so cute! Haha!

my gov't class was the most boring thing EVER b/c my teacher had the most monotone voice. I swear, it took less than five minutes and I was asleep, like EVERY DAY. I did manage a B in there, though.

And thank you!

My gov teacher was really monotone too. And also over 350 pounds which usually resulted in the classroom being ICE cold because he broke a sweat just walking from his desk to the front of the class.

Whoa i wish i was able to play that game in high school, i took a class like that but i went to the local court house and sentences bad kids. Not nearly as interesting as one would think the law system can be.

HAHAHAHA THE GOOBER GUY now thats awesome

From: [identity profile] why-me-why-not.livejournal.com
yeah, we got to do that too, but I don't remember much of that part of class. *g*

And yes! But Dean is such a goober, you know it's true...

:D Kids are adorable to no extent! That's awesome!!!

And I don't really know about Practical Law, but in my highschool Law as a subject is offered for Grade 11's and 12's. I took it both years and it was great! ;) My fave was when we got to go to the courts and sit in on a whole bunch of cases (though I can do that on my own, it was the only time I went), and having a mock trial.

Yeah, we went to sit in on same cases at court, too, but that was kinda boring. Drug Wars was fun.

Dean really is a total goober. Davey's funny, b/c he just kinda knows things sometimes, like predicts them, and mom asked him one time if he was psychic (or psycho, maybe) and he goes "Um, I think you mean genius!"
