Do you follow copperbadge? this is only related in the sense that it's about fandom, but he posted something earlier today (http://copperbadge.livejournal.com/2981859.html) about the history of fandom, specifically Dr Who fandom, and one of the comments on there, that I totally agree with, was I am completely convinced that there is a "fandom gene." The same behavior always crops up, no matter what the fandom, no matter when, even in a vacuum where the fan never heard of fannish culture.
