Jan. 28th, 2013 12:06 amOkay, so here's the lowdown on what's happening in the good ol' Roanoke Valley tonight:
There's a meteorologist that I follow on FB & Twitter b/c he's the only one I actually trust. He's the ONLY one in the valley that warned of the derecho last year, and he's good at getting his forecasts right and about explaining shit. A lot of people around here don't take him seriously b/c of some drug and sex scandal that went down about ten years ago (where he was involved in the drug part and the other weather guy was involved in the sex part and they both got fired and it was a Big Deal here), but I've always liked him. And maybe had a crush on him back in the day. Whatever, crushing on the weatherman is totally a thing, right? Recently he was hired by one of the local news stations as head meteorologist, but I don't watch that channel, I just follow Jamey.
Earlier tonight, I was watching Food Network (Rachel vs Guy! Poor Johnny Weir went home because kids don't like him! And he's never cooked for kids, or deep fried anything, or made a hot dog!) and talking shit about the news people b/c their headline for tonight was about Why Are There So Many Churches in Iron Gate? (which, to be fair, is a good question - Iron Gate is a community about three blocks long, and there are SEVEN churches there - but really, slow news day or what?) And Jamey posted something about reports of a fireball in the sky and asked if anyone else had seen it or had pictures.
No one has pictures. BUT PEOPLE IN FOUR COUNTIES SAW IT!
The general consensus description was like a flaming streak moving slower than a plane crash, moving North to South across the Western horizon. Reports of something actually hitting the ground on Bent Mtn meant fire and police crews were sent out there to search for it. Someone said they saw military planes flying in over Vinton. There's no confirmation that they were actually military, but there have been several low-flying aircraft going over the valley that are lower than ones that usually pass us over and going in the wrong direction to be taking off from or heading in to Roanoke Regional. Also, our airport closes at 10pm, and this was after that. And we heard helicopters circling here. My brother had some flying around his house, which is about 30 miles away in one direction, and my sister had some at her house, which is like 40 miles away in the OTHER direction. So helicopters. Possibly unrelated to the fireballs - the lifelink helicopters from our hospital cover a lot of territory. Or maybe they were looking for potential damage?
So, unconfirmed everything, but the conspiracy theories are fantastic. :)
My brothers both thought we were fucking with them when mom texted them. (Harley had seen the light from the fireball as it passed but thought she imagined it or whatever?) When they figured out I wasn't, they both asked if we were going to go search for the aliens. Like I said on twitter, we are totally those people. In case of an actual alien invasion, or an ELE, we would totally be the ones piling up in one of the trucks and going off in search of the aliens or meteor or whatever. (Also! ELE! I just wanna keep saying it b/c Deep Impact is one of my favorite movies? Lol.)
So I'm living in a SyFy movie. Whether it's aliens or some type of meteor-related disaster. Or maybe test launch of missiles from North Korea, that conspiracy theory came up too. (Although, the most common theory on FB is that it's a message from God that we need to get right with Him b/c the End is Nigh!)
The government and the media are covering it up. ;) The news stations all said basically the same things - that there were unconfirmed reports of a fireball in the sky, but there are no pictures and it was probably just a fireball, which is an event that happens all the time but usually in the day so we don't notice it. Also, officials are advising people to stay indoors and at home tonight, due to the potential for freezing rain that may start after 1am.
I'm waiting for the MIB to show up and flashy thing us all. Or some secret govt agency to show up and quarantine us under the guise of a gas leak and brainwash us all, like in Strangers. If you don't hear from me tomorrow, it might be because of aliens. And if I get kidnapped or eaten by aliens, yall had damn well better avenge me! <3
