Aug. 27th, 2019 08:43 pmSaturday, I went with Ronnie, Miranda, Miranda's mom, and Miranda's niece to Luray for the day. There are some cavern pics on my fb; the caverns are gorgeous. Although I'm pretty sure global warming is affecting the caverns too because they were really hot. It was a good day though. However. Let me tell you a story about my other child.
Davey, Travis, and Jordan left before I did to go to camp bethel and run a 5k, and they came back to the house for a while and then went out to meet up with Keaton (another counselor from camp) to go get food. They asked if they could go hang out with one of Jordan's friend Maddy and some of the other high schoolers that work at Famous Anthony's. Maddy has a pool and they were all going to hang out and swim and whatever. My rules were to be safe, make good choices, look after each other, be home by midnight. Davey's pretty much had the freedom to do whatever with his friends this summer on the weekends (he was basically gone for 10 weeks - left camp at like 9 on Friday and had to be back by 2 on Sunday, but a lot of that weekend time he was with the other camp kids anyway) and I trust him. Plus he and Jordan are practically 18. I was actually asleep when they got home around 1130 or so, and Davey came in to tell me that they needed help with Travis. So obviously there was alcohol at this party, which whatever, and Davey wasn't drinking because he was driving, but Jordan and BJ (Davey & Jordan's other best friend) were drinking a little, and Travis made friends with some other kids and was drinking but they didn't realize how much. And when they realized Travis was actually drunk*, they put him in the car and came home. By the time they got here, Travis had thrown up and passed out. So I made Davey and Jordan bring him inside, get him in the shower, get him to drink some powerade, etc, and sit up with him to make sure he didn't vomit again. Sunday they got to clean the car and wash the towels & blankets they used. And we talked about why it was a dumb thing to do - their brains are still forming and alcohol impairs that, they're too young to know their limits, legal trouble (for them, for whoever's party they were at, for me, for their parents), being kicked off teams for violating the vhsl contracts, not knowing these people means not actually knowing what you're drinking which can be extra dangerous, etc. And then I made Travis call his foster mom Michelle because that's part of the consequences. (He cried when I made him do that, he said he'd die if he had to tell her, but guess what, he didn't.) I feel bad that the boys got into trouble on my watch. And I feel extra bad because I know John and Michelle just got custody of Travis and this could have affected all of them badly.
Teenagers are the worst, you guys. (Let's not talk about the things WE did when we were teenagers, m'kay?)
