Jericho Drabbles

Jericho drabbles. Written for ME. Set after the season finale, and they kinda run into each other. I so wanna write more of these, feel free to encourage me. Posted 9-9-07.

200 words of Jake

Jake resisted the urge to look at the helicopters. The men from Newbern looked just as surprised as he felt, but he didn't think it would keep them from firing.

He was right.

He hated being in the middle of gunfire, hated the niggling feeling of guilt in the back of his mind that every squeeze of the trigger made him a potential killer, but he was defending his home, his family, his life.

He saw Stanley staring at the copters and shouted out a warning, but he wasn't in time to stop the bullet that tore into Stanley's leg. Stanley hit his knees and Jake started in that direction, ignoring the fact Stanley was waving him off. Halfway there, though, someone else slid to the ground beside Stanley.

Sean.

Oh, Stanley was going to love that. But Sean had a vested interest in Stanley staying alive, and now he had an excuse to stay out of the fight without looking like a coward. Perfect.

He watched them for a moment and turned back to the fight. Jake planned on personally putting a bullet in whoever had shot his friend after he took out the one who shot his dad.

200 words of Stanley

Fucking Jake and his fucking plans that never work out!

Stanley knew none of this was Jake's fault, least of all the fact that Stanley had thought it safe to turn his attention to the sky, relax his hold on his rifle, after Jake had issued the command to fire, but the anger gave him something to focus on. Jake was his best friend, an easy target, and Stanley knew that he'd willingly take the blame and verbal beating if they both made it out alive.

"Stanley!"

He looked up as Sean hit the dirt beside him, helping him behind a rocky rise in the hill. He closed his eyes against the pain, ignoring Sean's babbling as he ripped off a strip of shirt to tie around Stanley's leg.

His father, grandfather, family had poured their blood, sweat, and tears into this land, much like he was doing now. A rite of passage, maybe. He felt connected to them, their presence lending strength and hope to them all. They were going to win this thing; he knew it.

And he guessed he'd probably end up keeping Sean after it was all said and done. Bonnie would be happy about that.

255 words of Jonah

Jonah stared at the empty desk, listening to the noise of his men echoing around the compound. Mitchell's death had caused the former group of bandits to turn against one another, according to the stragglers who had made their way back to him, and the compound had stood empty when they arrived.

Some of the men, newer recruits, had questioned their retreat from Jericho. They were still green enough to be influenced by a sense of morality and concern for their fellow men. Jonah had gotten pretty good at suppressing those feelings, even when it came to his crew. Worrying about others led to trouble.

The night Chris had died, Jonah had lost more than just one child. He had treated Jake as a son, even if his parenting skills were often misguided. But he had pushed too hard, and in the end he had lost them all -- Chris to the small cemetery just north of town, Jake to five years of doing God-knows-what anywhere-but-here, and Emily to a life that would never include him.

He knew this was his chance. He couldn't make up for the past, couldn't change anything, but he could be there for Jake and Emily now. He just wasn't sure if he actually had the courage to take that step and drag his men with him. In the end, there really wasn't a decision to make. He was already up and headed for the truck before the runner from town finished speaking, telling them that Johnston Green was dead.

200 words of Heather

Heather had finally convinced the officer in charge to let her come along in one of the helicopters, which was her first stroke of good fortune. The second was that they didn't realize her headset was tuned to the same frequency as the two head officers, who were discussing something that was apparently secret enough that no one else on their mission knew. She didn't understand all of what they were saying, but she grasped enough to realize that they planned on "helping" Jericho defeat Newbern and then destroying the town to get to Hawkins. She tried to come up with a plan. Maybe she could talk someone into taking out these two in accidental friendly fire?

She didn't really know Hawkins, and she had her suspicions about him because he had shown up out of nowhere right before the bombs had gone off and there were rumors. But if Hawkins had been a threat to Jericho or its people, Jake would have taken him out. And Heather trusted Jake completely, so she would have to take Hawkins's side on this. When the helicopters landed, she slipped away from the soldiers and hoped she could find someone that would help.

Jericho ficlet from the 14 valentines posts. Written midseason 1. Posted 2-13-07.

Heather tried to calm the butterflies in her stomach as she peeked into the crowded church. She didn't really have anything to be nervous about -- unless she counted walking down the aisle with Jake Green.

She was happy that Emily had worked out her feelings, that Roger had stood beside her while she did, and that they had decided on a Valentine's Day wedding. They all needed a reminder of love and life, and it looked like the whole town had come out to the wedding.

What she didn't quite understand was how Roger and Jake had become friends. She had been really surprised when Emily had told her Jake was going to be Roger's best man. The last thing she wanted to do was spend time with Jake, and they had been forced together so much over the last couple of days that she was on edge. She still wasn't sure what her own feelings about Jake were; she had been doing her best not to think about it when she thought she couldn't have him.

Heather jumped at the touch of a hand on her lower back.

"Ready?" Jake asked with a smile.

Not really, she thought, but she forced a smile of her own and took his arm to walk down the aisle.

Dale/Skylar, written for the 14 valentines posts. Posted 2-10-07.

Skylar knew the other side of the bed was empty before she opened her eyes. A year ago she never would have imagined waking up in a bed with Dale, but the world was a different place now and it was strange waking up without him. They had been "playing house" for months now, much to the dismay of her friends. They had a couple rough spots, mainly revolving around the whole Mitch Cafferty situation, but he made her happy, and it just felt right.

Skylar slipped out of bed and padded down the stairs. She found Dale in the kitchen, a goofy smile on his face that usually meant he was pleased with himself.

"What's got you so happy this early in the morning?"

"I've got a surprise for you." He pulled a bag off the counter and handed it to her. "Happy Valentine's Day."

Skylar peeked into the bag and nearly dropped it when she realized what it was. Yeah, things had definitely changed, but a world where she found love with Dale Turner and thought Diet Coke was the most amazing Valentine's gift ever was just the place she wanted to be.
