Sons of Anarchy.
Seriously. SPN'ers, do you remember all the times we'd come away from an episode being all "fuck you kripke" and whatnot? Yeah, what I feel for Kurt Sutter is a million times that, lol, but still in a good way. I mean, it takes great storylines to keep the viewers (overly)invested in a show, right? (Dude, I cried like a baby over THE METALLICAR at the season 1 finale of spn, and when I was spoiled for Sam dying in season 2, I had a minor freakout at work over it - I'm not exactly new to being too invested in tv shows and fictional characters.)
We knew going into the episode that someone important was going to die. Kurt made a point to say it on last week's WTFSutter and to try and get the word out via twitter and facebook, so that if anyone wasn't going to watch in real time, they could avoid the internet (and spoilers) until they did get to see it. There was a list going around of the most likelys, and I totally called it. (I had it narrowed down to three, but the one who did die was at the top of my list.) I tried not to be spoilery on twitter (there's actually still a couple people on my twitter feed who won't watch it until tonight). The comments I did make - things like "Oh Gemma, what a bitch move" could have happened in every episode. Gemma IS a bitch, it's why we love her. And a couple tweets about Juice - well, Theo Rossi is adorable and Juicy is a freaking idiot sometimes. Plus there was lots of "oh Jax" going on at my house, and hiding my face behind a pillow while I was watching.
Anyway! Spoilery type comments!
First, let me tell you about the two possibles who weren't the one that died. (That's a very poorly constructed sentence; I apologize.) Unser was one of my choices, for obvious reasons. I mean, he may be a retired cop, but he's old and has cancer and I really thought he was a goner back at the end of this season's premiere when he got the shit beat out of him during the home invasion. I love Unser. I was really upset at that episode because I thought he did die, and I don't know how I would have felt about two serious deaths in one episode. (I am TRAUMATIZED by Dawn's death, fyi.) But his death, although sad, wouldn't have been as shocking and "game-changing" as the one that was being hinted at. (No bets on him making it through the season, though, especially since he's getting involved in looking into the home invasions.)
My other choice was Tig. (Seriously, part of the reason I'm traumatized by Dawn's death is because he loves his kids. We saw that last season when she came to scam money off of him. He doesn't know how to be a dad, but he loves his girls and he'd do anything in the world for them, and I can relate to that, and as soon as he got that phone call that Dawn had been picked up, I was thinking about how his love for his daughter was going to be his personal downfall but didn't realize how bad it would be.) Tig has done a lot of bad things. That's probably an understatement. I mean, he killed Donna in season 1, and I didn't think I'd ever be able to get over that, but somehow I did when I wasn't paying attention. He went off half-cocked last season and (because Clay is a lying scumbag asshole, argh) started this whole thing with Pope. He's done a bunch of minor(ish) shit, like the whole trouble first season when the club had to steal dead bodies because he was fucking the help, or when he got picked up by bounty hunters. But. He helped Gemma out when she needed it. He's helped Tara. He felt guilty as shit over Donna, and now he had to watch his daughter get BURNED ALIVE. So, there are two reasons he wasn't going to be the one to die - he has to get some type of revenge on Pope AND on Clay for the shit that went down. And he's too ornery. Seriously, I hear this all the time - my dad and his buddies feeling guilty (after they've been drinking) about being alive when there are younger people, who are arguably better persons, suffering and dying every day. (When Brandy died earlier this summer - she's my age and has been fighting cancer for years - I heard variations of this same pitiful story from several of my lake drunks.)
Anyway. Jax has a lot of shit on his plate. It sucks being in charge, and it sucks even more that he never meant for things to go this way. With the way Opie jumped in at the last minute and gave the sheriff a reason to arrest him just so he could be in prison with Jax and Chibs and Tig, I knew something was going to go wrong. And when Pope gave his demands, I would not have been surprised if Jax had chosen Tig to die. But when I figured out Jax was going to sacrifice himself (JAX!), I knew Opie was going to step in. Dammit, Opie! Now what happens to his kids? That's my biggest concern. I mean, I'm super concerned about Jax, because Opie is his best friend and his BROTHER and this shit is going to fuck up Jax's head royally, but those poor kids. Their mom and dad and grandpa all murdered because of SAMCRO. And their stepmomma is an ex-junkie pornstar.
All these people acting like it was a horrible thing to do and saying they're never going to watch the show again - c'mon. Get the fuck over it. It was the way to go, and it makes for good story. And it's not the first death we've had to deal with. Donna, Half Sac, Kozik, Piney. Miles. Dawn. Hell, even Hale's death was pretty horrifying and sad! (I liked Hale, actually, and I was freaked when he died.) At least Opie went out on his terms, and you know there is going to be serious retaliation for this shit.
And there are a bunch of my thoughts on Sons, for the half dozen of you who watch with me. :)

Date: 2012-09-29 04:55 pm (UTC)I was spoiler-free , but out of the four it was painfully obvious it would be Opie... still, I'll steer clear of that scene for a while !
what I'm really interested in is what Jax is going to tell Tara - or won't btw - Maggie Siff's delivery in her scenes was stellar
meanwhile, if Sutter keeps this up I'm likely to throw up before the end of the season ...
