Tournament Weekend! Yay! Except, not so much yay.

We've had a couple dual meets and two tournaments before now. Davey went 4-1 the first dual, missed the second b/c of a nasty virus, placed 4th at the first tournament and 3rd at the second. But, one of the kids he wrestled the first week quit. (He specifically said he didn't want to wrestle Davey again, even though that's not why he quit.) One of the kids the second week ended up on the injury list because wrestling with Davey aggravated a previous cracked rib injury. Third week, Davey broke a kid's leg. Not on purpose or anything, they got tangled up and when they fell, the kid's leg got caught and snapped - I swear, I'm going to have nightmares about it for ages, the sound was horrific. None of these things were intentional, and injuries are common in wrestling. But it's been a rough season already, even though Davey's rocking it. He put in a lot of work over the summer and is a lot more confident and assertive on the mat.

Then comes today, omg. Big Orange is one of the most important tournaments of the year for us - lots of great competition, several of the schools we'll be up against for regionals, etc etc. So everyone's excited, despite the fact that it's Christmas break and it's disgustingly cold and rainy outside and the team had to be at school at 6:45 this morning.

Our 106 didn't make weight. He was .2 pounds over, even with the one pound allowance the wrestlers get at this point in the season. Walker is a big point scorer for us, so that sucked anyway to lose him.

During warm ups, Davey (who is 195, in case I haven't said that) was warming up with our 220 (Cameron), and Cameron threw Davey... and Davey landed on our 120 (Riley). I wasn't there for this, but everyone was like "it all happened in slow motion, and we all knew what was going to happen but couldn't stop it." Riley said he felt them hit him, and was shocked for a moment then fell, and then the pain came. So, we got to call for an ambulance before the tournament even started! Riley's foot is broken in multiple places, and the way he fell apparently bent his toes in a weird way and cracked the bone all the way across? Idk, his mom was trying to explain it to me when they came back to the tournament after the hospital. But he has to see an orthopedic surgeon on Wednesday to discuss possibly putting screws in his foot. Also, he's been a big placer for us and has wrestled for years, but now his season for this year is over.

Our 145 Zack got a concussion after his opponent pulled an illegal move.

And then there's Davey. Davey's goals for this year are to qualify for states (he was one spot away last year - he finished 5th in regionals and top 4 go to states) and to not get pinned. And he's done super well on not getting pinned - the matches he's lost so far he's mostly lost by points but he puts up a good fight and hangs in there for all 3 periods. So he's up against this kid who was a state qualifier last year, and who has a record for pinning people in the first minute of a match. Davey gets about halfway through the third round, and yeah he's losing like 11 to 4, but he's fighting, and his foot gets caught under the kid when he rolls and there's a pop and ughhhhh. Call the trainer. The worst part for Davey was that the pain (which was sudden and kinda widespread? like around his ankle and up his leg?) made him hyperventilate and so obviously that made everything worse. The coaches and the trainers are on the mat with him, and I can't hear what they're saying but I've got like six teenage boys all trying to hug me at one time (one of the kids who graduated last year but was in for the holiday so came to the tournament was on the other side of the mat and practically tripped over himself coming to hug me) even though I wasn't really upset b/c it's Davey. And also I was a little in shock. But apparently they asked him to wiggle his toes and he started freaking out like "I don't know! Are they still there?" So they get him over off the mat and have his foot propped up and checking it over and stuff, and the trainer and the coach decide it's probably just a sprain but recommend getting it checked out anyway. So I asked Davey if he wanted to go to urgent care and he goes "No, I have another match to wrestle!" He was so upset we wouldn't let him finish the night. (He lost that match by injury, and then because he couldn't wrestle again he lost his next match by medical default, so he's out of the tournament.) Xrays confirm it's just a sprain, but ughhhh. I could really do with a lot less excitement in my wrestling season!
