I was reading a SGA/H50 crossover and while I liked it, I kept getting tripped up every time Danny was mentioned. An AU about a sci fi show requires a lot of suspension of belief, but there is no conceivable universe in which Danny Williams willingly leaves Grace. (There was no mention of Grace at all, so maybe this was a reality in which she didn't exist, but then Danny would never have gone to Hawaii.)

I've finished a couple of books, including a YA book called Echo by Pam Muñoz Ryan that I really enjoyed. I'm currently reading Tower of Swallows from the Witcher series and Stumbling Into Grace by Lisa Harper, and listening to The Night Watchman by Louise Erdrich.

I read the last chapters of Prince Caspian to my children today. I may have mentioned this before, but if not, since the pandemic, I've been doing daily videos for my kids (the church's children) on our private fb group in addition to Sunday school lessons. It's a lot of books, lol. While most of them are obviously short children's books, I've also done a couple chapters at a time from The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe and Prince Caspian. Trying to decide now if I want to go on to Voyage of the Dawn Treader, or switch to another favorite like The Hobbit or the first Harry Potter book, or pick something more kid-like, maybe the Ralph books or the Bunnicula series.

Not only was this a fun read, but I really appreciated the writing style!

We want to see God's dream come 'on earth as it is in Heaven.'" (of course, Jarrod McKenna recently said "We're not called to transform the world - that's the Holy Spirit's work. We're called to love." Although these sound contradictory at first glace, I think they actually work together. We transform the world by love and the Holy Spirit works through us and that love.)

It began like a lot of these things began for Clint: with a beautiful lady knocking on his door and asking for help.

Marvel || Clint Barton/Natasha Romanov, James "Bucky" Barnes/Clint Barton/Natasha Romanov, James "Bucky" Barnes/Clint Barton, Clint Barton/Carol Danvers, Kate Bishop/America Chavez || 35k
A supervillain AU where Clint shoots arrows at people and gets beat up a lot. So, not really that much of an AU.
As a supervillain supercriminal contract worker with a morality deficit, Clint Barton leads a glamorous life. You know, stolen cars, dangerous women, a really confusing relationship with a meddling do-gooder, the works. It's pretty awesome. Except for, uh, medical bills, the mob, and being on the run all the time. That part isn't all that awesome.

Fun read, lots of snark.

I owe some replies to the awesome and sweet comments on my last post, but I've feeling shitty over that whole situation (and the added issue with Ralph), plus I've been busy with birthday parties (Ava and Neville) and sleeping more than is healthy. I'm not really sure what's been going on the past few days other than that.

Fic rec! It's fanfic based on the TV version of The Walking Dead, but you don't have to be familiar with the show at all in order to understand it. Word of warning, though, if you aren't familiar with the show, some of the language may be offensive because it's Daryl's POV and he's pretty offensive. (But still my favorite)

Win Friends, Influence People, Aim for the Head by Gusstat
Not rated on AO3, but there are quite a bit of swear words and talk of violence
22171 words
Author summary: Self-help in the post-apocalypse. Alternatively, "Everyone is Damaged: How to Persuade People Not to Shoot You In The Head." Eventually Daryl/Glenn, with side helpings of fluff, angst, gore and squirrels.

There are a few instances where the author slips into an alternate POV for a paragraph or so, but I can overlook that, because the Daryl voice is EXCELLENT. My summary would be that it's about Daryl realizing he's got a family with these people, even if it's a concept of "family" that is completely different from his fucked-up relationship with his brother. And somehow he's got a soft spot for Glenn that he doesn't want to admit to.

You know that feeling you get when you start reading a fic and you just know it's gonna be a favorite? Yeah, so that happened today. And it probably wasn't appropriate that I was reading it on my phone while standing in line while dropping monkeyface off at church camp, but I started it before we left here and wanted to finish it!

But yeah. If yall know me (and which fics are my all time favorites), then it won't surprise you that I loved this. So I'm sharing:

Clint really likes handcuffs; he’s just not sure how to tell Phil that. Which is a problem since they’ve been sleeping together for a few months now. Contains: a character experiencing subdrop and so description and discussions thereof, some non-consensual handcuffing (not in a sexual sense) and one non-negotiated scene. Also the following kinks: handcuffing, bondage tape, spanking, wax play and discussion of whipping, painplay and flogging.

[livejournal.com profile] gelsey is probably the only one who can answer this, but in the Dresden 'verse, there are different types of werewolves (the FBI agents that used the belts, the ones similar to Animagi like Billy & Georgia) - are there also werewolves that change according to the lunar cycle? There are some excellent stories being posted for both [livejournal.com profile] bandombigbang and [livejournal.com profile] spn_j2_bigbang. I'm having a great time with them. Here are a couple of my favorites so far:

After the Music by [livejournal.com profile] gemmi999
Summary: Brent knew that leaving Panic! at the Disco would be hard, but he never imagined it would be this hard.
FAVORITE! I was kinda iffy when I read the summary but it turned out a lot better than I was expecting and I'm really glad I read it. I really like the characterizations, especially Brent but also Bob and Pete. I could go on for a while about how much I loved this, but I'll just say you should definitely read it.

Navigate Me by [livejournal.com profile] emcay
Summary: Death Cabs is Brian's idea - a cab company that uses cheap cars and charges cheap fares to get people home from parties. While Mikey's busy laughing at him, Brian gets busy making it work; buying bombs, hiring mechanics off the street and letting Mikey's friends behind the wheel. There's no way it can fail...
excellent excellent excellent! Emcay creates an awesome world in her AU and I love her characterizations! Also, the art that goes with this is fabulous.

Thing-Thing by [livejournal.com profile] sinsense
Summary: When Gerard signed the admissions paperwork for the Fordhaven School for Boys, he knew he was signing up for four years of sexual frustration. No one was gay at Fordhaven. Gerard was all-too-aware that he would be a virgin until he graduated. In his senior year, though, this stupid gay freshman disproves Fordhaven's straightness, and throws Gerard's entire world off-kilter. Now, in between drawing, avoiding bullies, running an incredibly serious tabletop RP game, failing out of math, and hanging out with friends, Gerard is also busy kind of falling for this asshole who's way too young for him. It's not what he planned on, but it's what's happening. In conclusion: high school sucks.
[livejournal.com profile] sinsense is awesomeness defined; I love her writing style b/c it always feels REAL to me. I spent most of the fic going "OH GERARD" and getting all melty-hearted at the boys. Fantastic read, fun and awesome and just what I want from a high school au fic. <3
why_me_why_not: (sun)
Ugh, I'm SO TIRED! I blame it on the fact that I was outside in the sun ALL DAY. But I'm only physically tired; I think I'll be okay as long as I don't have to move from where I'm laying on the floor underneath the fan. Which is good b/c I have two bbb fics open that I'd really like to read, lol. (I have other ones marked that I'm interested in reading, but these are [livejournal.com profile] megyal and [livejournal.com profile] sinsense, so I really can't pass them up. Now if I could figure out which one to read first...)(ETA: I had [livejournal.com profile] playfullips in this list too, but decided to read hers first, so I took it off. BUT I DID READ HER LOVELY BRENDON/SPENCER FIRST!)

Yesterday was Free Friday downtown, so Kristina and I took the kids to Center in the Square. The science museum hasn't changed in thirty years, seriously. The Chesapeake Bay exhibit is still my favorite -- I love the horseshoe crabs. :) The history museum has added something about moonshine/moonshiners and it takes up like half the floor. It's kinda awesomely amusing, even though I had to censor myself when I was talking to Davey and Haley about it, b/c I kept wanting to add things about our family's personal history in moonshining, and considering I still know a few people in the moonshine business, I don't know if that'd been a good thing to share publically.

Both boys had soccer games last night and Davey had one this morning, and now we are DONE for the season, except for banquets. Football season is around the corner, though, so Ronnie's gonna play. I think practices start in August, so I get a little break. Davey wants to play rec basketball, which starts in like November. Davey also wants to take a gymnastics class, so I need to remember to check into that on Monday.

There's a coach for the team that Davey was playing last night & this morning (the South Salem Jedis -- Davey's team is the North Salem Hokies) and who also has a son that was on the team that Ronnie played last night (my boys are on separate teams b/c of their ages). Obviously, with only four teams in each age group, I've seen him around. I call him the Cute Soccer Coach; Mom calls him The One Who Looks Too Young. :P Anyway, I have run into him a total of five times in the last two days in places other than the soccer field. It's kinda funny, though I'd be more amused if I didn't feel like I was stalking him even though I'm totally not.

Went to two birthday parties for Holdon today. I love him to pieces; he is so cute! He's a whopping FIVE YEARS OLD today, lol. The second party was at Pam and Jay's house, and there was the kiddie pool and the slip-n-slide and water guns. We had such a blast. The boys are still over there now; Holdon wanted them to stay the night, and James promised to get up and make them chocolate chip pancakes and bacon for breakfast. (Joseph said he'd make me biscuits and gravy if I came over for breakfast; I'm considering it *g*) And Uncle Jay is off work tomorrow, so they're gonna take a field trip next door to see the baby Alpacas and muddy up a different part of the yard with the slip-n-slide. Good times, although I'm still kinda upset that we didn't get to go camping.

Anyway. I'm going to go read fic. <3
why_me_why_not: (Default)
I love chex mix, but I always sort out the pieces of it and eat them separately. Is that weird?

Went out with the RMG crew on Friday night; had a fucking blast. Audelio actually joined us, which was awesome. And Jon's boyfriend finally came out with us, too. He's such a sweetheart. They've been together for going on nine years and they are so cute together. Even if Jon is a pervy old man. Got all my Christmas shopping done, which is totally a plus. Now I just have to wrap the Santa presents. (Davey wrapped everything else for me; he's a bit of a disaster when it comes to wrapping but he's only six and it's the thought that counts, right?)

GUESS WHAT? [livejournal.com profile] irisgirl12000 wrote me a ficlet! <3 untitled, Shane & Brendon & Patrick I totally heart her. Plus, she encourages me shamelessly. I'm gonna post ficlets either later tonight or tomorrow, depending on how motivated I get. *lazy*

I do have a couple songs I wanna share, despite the fact that they're country and I know that's enough to put most of you off. Still, they would totally make awesome inspiration for fic.

Last Call by Lee Ann Womack

I don't need to check that message / I know what it says / "Baby, I still love you," / Don't mean nothing when there's whiskey on your breath / That's the only love I get / So if you're calling...

I bet you're in a bar / Listening to a cheatin' song / Glass of Johnny Walker Red / With no one to take you home / They're probably closing down / Saying "No more alcohol" / I bet you're in bar / 'Cause I'm always your last call
