I was waiting on this concert for like two months and I woke up sick this morning. Which so sucks. I was laying with Davey last night and he looked at me and was like "Momma, I'm gonna make you sick, y'know." And true enough, it happened. Actually, both boys have ear infections and I had to take them to Urgent Care this afternoon so now they're on antibiotics. Fun.
Anyway, I have a question for yall. I have NEVER been to a concert where I sat down the whole time. Never. Granted, I've only been to a couple dozen concerts (not counting the local bands we go see at Greystone) but still. I especially don't see how you're supposed to stay sitting when the band is doing get-up-and-dance, sing-with-us kinda songs. So me and Harley and several of the girls that were sitting in the same row as us stood up for most the concert tonight & the guy behind us was a real jerk about it. Honestly, when I go to a concert, I expect to stand for most of it, and if I'm gonna sit down, I expect that the person in front of me will still be standing, which is why I like sitting in the risers on the back of the floor b/c that way I can still see. But my stepdad says that I'm wrong and we were extremely rude, and that if you go to a concert and pay for an actual seat, then you should sit in it and not stand up at all.
So, what is the proper concert etiquette? Or your opinion on it?

Date: 2007-02-04 04:33 am (UTC)As for concerts...it really depends on the music. I've been to two sit down concerts. One was Linkin Park so of course EVERYONE was standing and singing and dancing. The other was Trans Siberian Orchestra and even though it's techinically rock, everyone stayed sitting. Just depends. And people will always be dicks no matter what you do.

Date: 2007-02-04 05:12 am (UTC)I think it depends more on the venue and the seating rather than the type of music. I've been to a few concerts that were just open floor & you stand whereever you can squeeze into a spot. I dunno, apparently I'm just a redneck and don't know any better.

Date: 2007-02-04 05:19 am (UTC)And both of those concerts I mentioned were the same venue. But yeah, when I go to small clubs it's anywhere you can squeeze. And I always wear my Army boots so when people jump on my feet I don't feel it. But you better believe they feel it if I jump on theirs. Haha.

Date: 2007-02-04 05:26 am (UTC)Clubs are a whole diff scene. And it depends on whether my cousin Trey is working at the club as to how we handle that.

Date: 2007-02-04 04:44 am (UTC)Another reason I hate people who stand is that I am short. Even if I stand, I will still not be able to see the band around the person standing up.
Basically, when someone's standing in front of me, it's like I paid 60 bucks for a radio broadcast that I could've stayed at home for free for and that pisses me off to no end.
/rant. Sorry but I've been to WAY too many concerts that have been ruined because of people standing in front of me so that I couldn't see anything.

Date: 2007-02-04 05:08 am (UTC)It just seemed weird to me tonight, b/c seriously, every other concert that I've been to at this civic center, everyone on the floor (in the floor seats and on the risers) has been standing. The people in the seats on the sides of the arena don't. So it just surprised me that there were like four or five random patches of two or three people in the risers and on the floor that sat the entire time. (and one of them had an infant in a carseat carrier -- why would you bring an infant to a concert?) And I never thought about it before now.
Also, I'm short too, so if I can't get seats in the first half a dozen rows, I buy tickets for seats in the risers b/c that way I'm sure to see over the people in front of me. Next time I'm gonna make sure our seats are on the top row of the risers so I don't have to worry about anyone being behind me.

Yeah, that's pretty much what my stepdad said. I never thought of it that way, b/c like i said, i'm used to the standing. And I can totally understand about being pissed about that.

Date: 2007-02-04 05:23 am (UTC)I expect to stand up during concerts, but I'm a conformist so if everyone sits down I most likely will too.

Date: 2007-02-04 06:09 am (UTC)I've had a lot of people like that. It's not your fault they're a party pooper who doesn't want to join in the fun.

Date: 2007-02-04 10:26 am (UTC)But I think your stepdad is right; if there *are* seats, you ought to sit in them. (Unless the group, of course, demands otherwise.)

Date: 2007-02-05 05:59 pm (UTC)My stepdad did have a valid point, and wook also argued that point well. I'd probably feel guilty about it if I had been the only one standing up. As it was, the majority of people in our section were standing, so I don't feel quite so bad.

Date: 2007-02-04 04:31 pm (UTC)However, at the Bitter End (the oldest NYC club venue), there are seats which you're supposed to sit in. If I stood up for Sirsy there (even tho their music is the get-up-and-move kind, as you know), I'd be told to sit down.
When I went to see Tori Amos and Sigur Ros, we all sat because the music is appropriate for that. But basically, I think it's just about going with what everyone else is doing, but if you get tired of standing, then you can sit if you want... even if you can't see. At that point, you don't bitch to the people around you who are standing, ya know?

Date: 2007-02-05 06:04 pm (UTC)And yeah, I think that going along with what everyone else is doing is probably the best course of action. Me personally, I find it hard to sit down when I'm tapping along with the beat or clapping my hands or singing along or whatever. Or swaying along with the slower songs. I just find that hard to do while I'm sitting. Of course, that could just be because I'm strange, though, so we'll let that go. *G*

Date: 2007-02-04 11:32 pm (UTC)But I think if it's any other type of concert than mentioned above, you should not sit.. And it's not rude, it's just having fun and doing what people do at concerts. So, long story short, the guy was just a jack ass. :)
