I watched Radioactive this weekend, and while Rosamund Pike was awesome, I was overall underwhelmed. I feel like it left too much out of Marie Curie's story and life.

I also watched Fahrenheit 451 and actually really liked that one. And I finally caught The Falcon and the Winter Soldier since all the episodes are up, and that was pretty great.

I realize I've been reccing fics, but I have also been reading a lot of books. Escapism, much? So I recently read:

Daisy Jones & the Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid - I really enjoyed this. It had a very interesting format, in addition to being an interesting and intriguing story. I listened to the audiobook version and it was done with different voice actors for each of the parts. Highly recommend.

The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes by Suzanne Collins - I liked the book but I still find Coriolanus Snow completely unlikeable. I figure I'm probably biased though since we know how he turns out in the future.

Before We Were Yours by Lisa Wingate - It feels weird to say I liked this, given the story and the fact it's based on real events which are baffling and horrific, but I did like it.

The Care and Feeding of Ravenously Hungry Girls by Anissa Gray - This was a very emotionally engaging story. Life and relationships are complicated, and I kinda like that everything doesn't end up wrapped in a nice neat bow.

And a couple fic recs, to stay on brand:

The Sheppard Equation by jenny_wren
Stargate Atlantis || Rodney McKay/John Sheppard || 22k
Rodney needs to solve the Sheppard Equation before his world falls apart.
Excellent storytelling

Leading the Way by nogoaway
Generation Kill || Brad Colbert/Nate Fick || 27k
In which Nate, being an officer at heart, takes approximately 25 years to find his own dick with a map.
Super well written!

I'm trying to refrain from starting every post here and every letter to my prison penpals with "sorry, things have been crazy lately," because things are always crazy and I just need to accept that it's my new normal and roll with the chaos. Not that anyone is reading these posts anyway.

movies & TV )

I just finished reading Jay Baruchel's Born Into It (loved it) and a collection of essays about women in the bible and the church.

I was planning on doing NaNo this year - honestly just a collection of stories from my life and such, for the kids - but haven't managed to start yet. Oops.

Movie updates: I watched The Other Guys (which I hadn't watched before and found decently funny) and Poltergeist II (which I have seen, more than once, but it's been a while) over the weekend with mom. After youth group last week, I went with Davey, Bebout, Lily, and Mariah to see IT Chapter 2 (because the girls are too young to go without an adult). It was actually funny, and wasn't as bad as I thought. I did not see the first one. (I've seen the original.) But I like several of the actors in this one so it was okay.

Sunday, though, Davey and I went to see The Peanut Butter Falcon, which was fantastic. It was a great story, and I appreciated the cast. Highly recommend.

I finished one of the books I have on Brethren Heritage, and am about halfway through a book Jimmy Carter wrote about his mother. I read a few mediocre fics off my AO3 "to read later" list.

In RL this week: Davey got another reckless driving ticket, two of our church members passed away, Miranda told her therapist she was contemplating suicide and was almost admitted as an inpatient but instead they adjusted her meds but she's been extra extra this week, my sister Shannon was in the hospital for the past two days, Davey's friend Riley had a house fire and she had to be treated for smoke inhalation and can't return home for a few weeks, a 4yo in our community who has been battling cancer passed away, Illiana got an infection in her finger and is on two different courses of antibiotics, Jesse (one of my youth) has a high ankle sprain and is in a boot so his football season might be over, my cousin-in-law Sarah is going through a bunch of stuff and now has to make her eighth grade daughter switch schools in the middle of the school year. It's been funtimes.

School starts tomorrow. Youth Group starts the day after. My house is still a disaster. I've barely looked at making plans for Sunday school and youth group and the peace unit. I'm totally winning, you guys. Lol.

We had a mini camping trip this weekend. My cousin owns creek front property with a good stretch of land and a stocked pond, and my dad has a camper and small campground area set up on it, so the boys and I went up there and spent time with my dad. We also celebrated Jordan's 18th birthday, which was fun.

I have yet to finish any of the books I've got sitting here, but it's more because I'm getting other stuff done than because I'm overwhelmed and avoiding them.

Ronnie and I went to see Angel Has Fallen, which I really enjoyed. Finally got to watch the Shark Week movie Capsized (yay Josh Duhamel and Tyler Blackburn!) and am now watching Stronger. Enjoying a lazy day, lol.

I'm still cleaning up my inbox, so here are a couple shareable links from there and also a few from the last week or so:

I don't think I ever made a post about Godzilla, which I thought was a super fun movie and really enjoyed. But I apparently made a note to myself in my email about what I wanted to say/remember about it, so:

1. The handwavy science was great.
2. Dr Serizawa said, "The moment of crisis are also potential moments of faith."
3. "We're a bunch of horny, murderous carnivores."
4. "Sometimes the only way to heal a wound is to make peace with the demon who caused it."
5. And I want a GK AU. I still want a GK AU from Skull Island (and have some pieces of one floating around somewhere) so I'm sure the two could go together.

Still being avoidant. Blah.

Have yall seen this preview for Lawless? I am so excited for this movie! Only because this is my home and my history. Yall knew my family was moonshiners, right? They used to run it, back in the day, but I may or may not know people who still make it on a regular basis. (Some of you may not have been here for this story, but our local history museum did a special exhibit on moonshine a few years back, and when we walked in, one of my kids was like "Oh! This still is just like the one behind Aunt Boobie's house!") Anywho, EXCITED!

It's apparently end-of-the-world movie weekend on cable. Deep Impact, 2012, Armageddon, Dawn of the Dead, Resident Evil, War of the Worlds, Independence Day.

So... where is the Avengers fic where they're facing an end-of-the-world or sci-fi worthy natural disaster that their unique powers can't actually defeat?

Finally got to see The Mechanic. It definitely wasn't a good movie, but there were car chases and shit got blown up and Jason Statham killed people, and that's really all I was looking for from that movie so it's all good.

I somehow have almost 7000 words of high school nonsense involving kittens, and like 1500 words of what started out as Shelter fluff but ended up being Zach having lunch with Cody and meeting Cody's best friend Belle and hush, it's my imaginary world, Belle and Cody can totally go to the same school if I want them to!

I also had a reprieve from my headache for part of the day today, and got some housework done, and have clean blankets for my bed, and made awesome dinner (roast beef, homemade rolls, mashed potatoes, mac'n'cheese, baby carrots), but my headache returned before I even got to eat, so boo. Now I've stolen my brother's spot on the couch so I can watch Survivor and Criminal Minds (EMILY!), but Tim's downstairs playing COD anyways.

I hope the Texas crew is having fun with SXSW shenanigans and stuff, and that everyone else is having at least a decent week. LOVE YOU ALL!

Mom & I took Ronnie, Davey, & Joseph to see The Sorcerer's Apprentice, and I was absolutely delighted by it! Non-spoilery type reaction: the effects were good, the humor was balanced enough that the kids and the adults were all entertained, I love (and want) the soundtrack, and Balthazar was very Dresden-esque. I enjoyed it, and will definitely go see it again if it hits the drive in this summer.

Since I'm reminded of Dresden, I do feel like I need to say that one of the things I love most about Dresden is that he is noticeably flawed. Idk if I've said that before, and I know only a handful of you are into The Dresden Files. But I love that even though Dresden is a hero, he doesn't always win, and sometimes he lets his emotions influence him into making wrong decisions, and he's not superhuman - he's been injured physically and mentally and emotionally. I know I haven't made a post about the most recent book, but I do have a lot of thoughts about it, especially about Maggie and Molly and Thomas and the stupid end to that stupid book. (Although Jim Butcher said on twitter that it doesn't count as a cliffhanger if he knows what happens next. Damn authors!)

Okay, we're gonna get Harley & the baby and go have breakfast for dinner, then I gotta make sure Davey is all packed and ready for camp b/c I have to drop him off tomorrow afternoon. Joseph is staying the night, and I'm pretty sure they've got plans to watch Transformers as soon as we get home. Me, on the other hand, I plan on talking [livejournal.com profile] irisgirl12000 into telling me more of the story we were talking about last night and maybe working on a story of my own.

Love yall! Hope you are all having a fantastic weekend!

Best text I got yesterday: You are dangerously close to invoking plot in our selfindulgent bandom world!

haha. My friends are the best friends.

Took the boys to see HBP last night. I think that, like with OotP, I like the movie pretty well from a movie standpoint the first time I watch it, but after I see it more than once, I start picking out things I'm not happy with. do I need to cut for spoilers when we've all read the book? )

The other day, me and [livejournal.com profile] casualyobsessed and [livejournal.com profile] fangs_up1 were hanging out (I think this was the day they were making their movie preview b/c they're silly and summer vacation makes them bored) and we were listening to The Used's Blood on my Hands and I said "some things can't be tweeted"> (the actual line is "some things can't be treated") and now I keep saying it. *fail*

Took the kids to see Looney Toons this morning at one of the local (small) theaters; my cousin Scott was there with his kids and his girlfriend. Free refills on popcorn = the kids went through FIVE BAGS of popcorn in the one hour show. I'm getting ready to head to my cousin Amy's for a birthday party and will probably get stuck over there all afternoon. Which means I'm gonna be txtng the heck out of a few of you, haha.

Hope everyone is enjoying their weekend!! <333
