I am disappointed in the outcome of the Great Food Truck Race. Ugh.

I was worried about being disappointed in Leverage: Redemption so was hesitant to watch it, but some of my favorite peoples seemed to like it, so I started watching it the other night when Davey had the evening off. It is still fun and mostly has the same feel of the original. I don't dislike Breanna, but I miss Hardison. Eliot/Hardison/Parker is the OT3 of my heart. I love that Parker is still so Parker and that Eliot is still so grumpy. (I have watched Librarians multiple times between the original show and this one, so it still trips me up to see Noah Wyle and Christian Kane in these characters instead of as Flynn and Stone.)

I've been watching Z Nation and just started season 4. I think I'm going to give it up (even though I love Doc and 10K and Addy) and pretend it ended after two seasons. Season 4 is dumb, and most of season 3 was too except for the episode with Skeezy and Sketchy.

I saw Black Widow! I'm so glad the theaters are open again, lol, I have missed them. I've seen six movies in the last two weeks.

There are like 9 days left to register for 2021 GISH! We still have room on our team if anyone wants to join! Team Rocksalt

So there's been a lot going on, and it's got me in my head and a bit messed up, so I keep putting off writing about it. Spent the weekend of my birthday in the hospital. Had gone for routine bloodwork, and the next morning while I was preparing to leave for Pittsburgh, my dr office called first thing and told me to go straight to the ER. My hemoglobin level was at 6.5, when it's supposed to be at or above an 11 or 12. I've been anemic for a while, but never that low. So, lots of blood work and waiting around and whatnot, got a blood transfusion and an iron transfusion. My hemoglobin was up to 7.4 when I left the hospital. (It was 8.7 when I was at hematology two weeks ago and 9.1 yesterday.) No visible bleeding, so I got a referral to hematology, gastro, and ob/gyn. But it's got me in a bad headspace, between missing my Pittsburgh weekend, thinking about the bills I'm already racking up, and knowing the number of phone calls this is going to entail. Plus, everyone asking me how I am, which is emotionally exhausting.

Someone hit Davey's car yesterday. Apparently this old guy missed his turn so he stopped and backed up in the middle of the road and ran right into the front of the challenger. Davey is so upset, obviously, even though the damage is minor.

This morning, Miranda passed out in the hallway at home and had to be taken to the hospital by ambulance. This happens sometimes, and the drs have yet to figure out why.

Mom is not doing well. I keep trying to convince my siblings that they need to get over here and spend time with her. She wants to keep working until January (when she'll be eligible for retirement) but I'm trying to convince her that she can stop now, or at the end of the summer at the latest.

The boys and I (and their girlfriends) went to see F9 the other night. It was so ridiculous, not that I expected anything else, but seeing the F&F movies at the theater is a tradition for us. (Leah and Miranda have never seen any of the others, but they didn't want to be left out.) I've missed the movies.

Sgt. Brad Colbert has been on a lot of strange missions, but this promises to be his most out there yet: Atlantis. This is not a story about falling in love. This is a story about falling in team.
Gen story, set mostly in season 4, military focus, outsider perspective, interesting original characters, focus on women in the military. Lots of worldbuilding and 'what happens in Atlantis where the cameras aren't pointing' daily life stuff.
why_me_why_not: (Default)
I recently finished David Arnold's The Electric Kingdom, which was very weird in a good way, and Helene Wecker's The Golem and the Jinni, which took ages because it was a slow and heavy read but I really enjoyed it. And I watched the second season of The Boys!  I think it's kinda funny that three of the actors from Timeless - Claudia Doumit, Goran Visnjic, and Malcolm Barrett - were all in it.

I told Bebout he has to find somewhere else to stay. I feel bad, but he's an adult (technically) and has to do something to help himself. Lying to us, blowing money on weed, skipping his doctor appts, quitting his job - I'm not dealing with it.

Our current fosters are a mom and three babies, and I'm pretty sure the mom was a feral. The shelter told me she's "spicy." They're currently in one of our big kennels, trying to get them kinda used to things for a couple days and then we'll turn them loose in one of our spare bedrooms, but she paces back and forth and takes the babies by turn and tries to find a way to escape with them. The kittens are fine with being taken out and played with, and we've been letting them out to run around with Duke (he loves kittens; Duchess goes and hides when the kittens come out), but momma is not having it. She got out earlier when Miranda was trying to clean the kennel, and Ronnie and Leah had to chase her all over the house and she tore Ronnie up. Good thing she has her shots. We've only had them a couple of days, so I'm hoping she'll at least settle enough to be socialized enough to be adoptable.

We're adjusting my migraine meds and I swear I've done little more than sleep for the past two weeks and it's a mess. And oh hey, my Hurricanes just won their game, so I guess it's bedtime for me now too!

I watched Radioactive this weekend, and while Rosamund Pike was awesome, I was overall underwhelmed. I feel like it left too much out of Marie Curie's story and life.

I also watched Fahrenheit 451 and actually really liked that one. And I finally caught The Falcon and the Winter Soldier since all the episodes are up, and that was pretty great.

I realize I've been reccing fics, but I have also been reading a lot of books. Escapism, much? So I recently read:

Daisy Jones & the Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid - I really enjoyed this. It had a very interesting format, in addition to being an interesting and intriguing story. I listened to the audiobook version and it was done with different voice actors for each of the parts. Highly recommend.

The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes by Suzanne Collins - I liked the book but I still find Coriolanus Snow completely unlikeable. I figure I'm probably biased though since we know how he turns out in the future.

Before We Were Yours by Lisa Wingate - It feels weird to say I liked this, given the story and the fact it's based on real events which are baffling and horrific, but I did like it.

The Care and Feeding of Ravenously Hungry Girls by Anissa Gray - This was a very emotionally engaging story. Life and relationships are complicated, and I kinda like that everything doesn't end up wrapped in a nice neat bow.

And a couple fic recs, to stay on brand:

So, I totally fell asleep last night during the race, in the middle of txtng with [livejournal.com profile] snarkyrainbow and following livetweets from my NYC girls about PStump. Woke up around 2am, asked my brother who won the race (Matt Kenseth, for those keeping track), tried to play catch up on twitter/email but that didn't last very long. Seriously, I am SO TIRED these days, esp when I actually take meds for my headaches.

I'm kinda depressed that my brother is out here playing basketball with Davey, and Harley is planting flowers in the yard, and I can't do either. :( (Ronnie is at his other momma's house again) But it's a nice day, so I have the munchkin in her cage out here on the back porch. Roger and Maddie wanted us to come down to the lake for cookout/boatride/etc this evening, but I don't think I can handle that ride today. But Tim just came back from the store with steaks, so haha. He bought extra if anyone wants to come over for dinner, lol.

I've noticed that I have a bad habit of writing about nothing when I write fic. Like, one of the things I have up right now is 1500 words but half of it is really unimportant and pointless. Ridiculousness!

You may remember me saying something about [livejournal.com profile] apiphile writing Inception fic that was het and that I'd be disappointed if it was skipped over because of the pairing. You may also remember that I haven't seen Inception, but I like to read AUs and actually like to read fics by authors I like in fandoms I don't know because I can imagine the characters however I like in my own head. And it's easier than most with [livejournal.com profile] apiphile's fic, because I have read her original fic and even though TV and BPV aren't actually original fic, they are both worlds of their own. anyway, fic rec.

Still being super unproductive. Did have a good day on Saturday at Martinsville, despite the headaches and the fact it was super cold and windy and the Bass Pro team didn't win. With the storm rolling in today and that-time-of-the-month also rolling in, my headache last night and today has been epic. Also, my dad and I finished the bedroom downstairs last week, and even though it was decided that Tim would take that room until he found a new place of his own, he didn't go get his bed this weekend like he planned on, so I'm still stuck trying to be polite and not keep the TV/light/my laptop on at night since he has to be up at the crack of dawn for work and we're sharing the living room. But I generally love anything she writes enough to include it on my rec lists. So if anyone skips over it just because it's HET? I would be disappointed.

I am failing at LJ right now. Actually, I'm failing at life, the internet, and everything right now, so I guess it's par for the course. But I have a list of things I wanted to post about, so I'm going to try and knock that out, then go tackle my inbox and comments, then my flist, then work on fic. Sound like a plan?

If this entry seems like a jumbled mess... well, that's because it is.

Kane's got a song - I think it's from the Live in London album - called Oklahoma State of Mind. Part of it goes NASCAR, strip bars, American made cars, country rockin' women now to get up and get 'em, we got Budweiser beer, Jim Beam, Jack, tequila and lime. Every time I hear that, I think it's totally a Ray Person song. Y/N?

Shameless is SO FREAKING GOOD and I am sad that this week is the finale already when I just got into the show! And I want a million words of all kinds of fic, so I hope there are other people into this. Also, Lip is totally my favorite. But Ian and Fiona are too. And the rest of them.

And I'm totally writing Being Human fanfic (for the US version), especially after Monday's episode.

Someone, I think it was [livejournal.com profile] exsequar, posted links on twitter to these pictures of Antartica's Blood Falls, which are pretty damn awesome.

Everyone seems to be hanging out on Tumblr and I'm still behind when it comes to the tumblr craze. Sorry!

A million and one things happened in regards to the panic boys. Brendon Urie is still my favoritest thing in the ENTIRE FREAKING WORLD. No surprise. But I can't tell you anything specific about what's going on with them because I'm failing at the internet. But! I did get a concert call the other night! So I have panic + screaming fangirls on my voicemail, which is a total win!

Kirsten Vangsness posted this pic of MGG and Shemar the other day and it's totally adorable, as those two are.

Wil Wheaton posted about a Stand By Me reunion. for anyone who doesn't know, Stand By Me is my all time favorite movie. ♥

I have this article from our local No Kill Coalition open in a tab, but I'm not sure what I wanted to do with it.

And I have this up as a reminder that I want to find/steal the song b/c it was recced to me when I was looking for songs to write to. ([livejournal.com profile] junebug_waltz totally made me an awesome playlist to write kitten!fic too, btw. she is made of win.)

I still have [livejournal.com profile] swear_jar's the gentle art of making enemies: cigarettes open on my screen because it doesn't have nearly enough comments on it and I keep meaning to find more people to rec it to and/or encourage to read it.

We were playing Scene It the other day at James's and no one knew the scenes from Footloose! And it was like the tractor scene! Who doesn't know that?!

I am sick and tired of being crazy. So over this bullshit.

Also over these headaches. And I'm worried that they're going to ruin my enjoyment of concerts. I haven't actually been to a concert since I started having them. I mean, I went to the Cobra/Travie concerts, but that was while I was severely concussed, lol, so that doesn't count. And I did go see Carrie Underwood & Billy Currington, but I felt like crap that entire time, and I don't know if that was the company and/or my general emotional state that week. I am so afraid that my enjoyment of Panic and NKOTB/BSB is going to be affected by this. And that my enjoyment of races is going to be affected. We're going to Martinsville next weekend, so I guess that'll be the test.

The other tabs I have open are related to job searching or my CEUs, and the other windows I have open are also related to job searching or to partially written fic. I don't think yall want that, do you? So, I'm going to try to tackle some of this other stuff. I will be so happy when we get my bedroom finished because trying to be quiet because my brother is sleeping is kinda boo. But he has to be up at 3am. Blah.

If I've missed something important, tell me here!

Alright, I'll quit my bitching.

Miracles in Japan: Four-Month Old Baby, 70-Year Old Woman Found Alive

Navy Images from Earthquake/Tsunami Relief

The workers who remained at the Fukushima Daiichi plant are pretty much heroes in my book.

As seen over at [livejournal.com profile] strangecreature's LJ, [livejournal.com profile] snakewhissperer's awesome baby brother is cycling over 500km from Luton, England all the way to Paris to raise money for Medecins Sans Frontieres (Doctors Without Borders). That's a damn fine feat! It's a very straight-forward system they've got set up for donations. The money goes straight to MSF and the much-needed cheerleading goes to the valiant dude in question. Please wander over, take a peek and spare some change for the cause: OVER HERE!

For a dose of awwwww!, go read this pre-movie Shelter!fic by [livejournal.com profile] pjvilar: Snapshot From Mexico

Amazing Young Chinese Girl Plays Piano With No Fingers On One Hand

Ben Savage is now on Twitter! Boy Meets World! But I'm even more amused by the fact I found out from Lance Bass.

GUYS GUYS GUYS!

GUESS WHAT?

[livejournal.com profile] swear_jar POSTED FIC!

I am super sleepy and grumpy about the dreary day and about the lack of post-Oscar afterparty conciliatory Andrew/Jesse sex fic, but I will read Jess!fic and watch Castle and my night will be good. :)

So, yall should go read this awesome GK AU (that I have been waiting on for weeks) and leave Jess some love. Or at least a "hey, I liked this" comment.

The Gentle Art of Making Enemies: Cigarettes by [livejournal.com profile] swear_jar
GK || Rated R || Brad/Ray || 28K || warning for violence
Assassin!AU. This is a continuation of the gentle art of making enemies, which is a wee short prologue that is very much need to read for some of this to make sense.

Good morning! Happy Friday!

I have to work on more CEUs today, which isn't all that fun, obviously. But at least I don't have to leave the house this morning. It's all cold and rainy and yucky outside again. We definitely need the rain, especially with the early start to fire season and the large number of forest fires we had last week, but I'm glad I don't have to go out in it.

Today is Bert McCracken's birthday. Last year on this day (lol), I took Monkeyface to see The Used in concert and he got the band to sign his shoes and he and Bert are "buddies for life" now (according to Bert). I love that pocketsized crazy dude.

Want some more links?

I've been reading original fic lately instead of fandomy stuff, and the story I read last night was cute, so I figured I'd share. Half a Lie by [livejournal.com profile] silver_etoile. Two months ago, Cody kissed his best friend. It's a good way to start a Friday. :)

Also, I'm a little late on this, but I got this link from over at [livejournal.com profile] more_is_more: Warm and Fuzzy Heart Day Icons

Most of yall are more tumblr savvy than I am, but I figured I'd ask anyway - have you seen this picture of Misha and Jensen? And this one of James Franco's cat nap? :)

Hope everyone has a fantastic weekend lined up! *mwah*

DUDE! THIS WEEK IS ALL ABOUT AWESOME POSTS ON MY FLIST!!

Favorite authors posting fic is always A++, so let's start there:

Shelter by [livejournal.com profile] stratospherique
Shelter || 2800 words || Porn with a dash of sexual orientation questioning || Title comes from the movie this is loosely intended to be a prequel to- see it. Surf dudes having feelings and sex, what more could you want? Seeing the movie is massively unnecessary for reading, though, it's intended to stand entirely on its own.

Memoirs: Epilogue also by [livejournal.com profile] stratospherique
Porn || Features fluff and warm fuzzy feelings.
(goes along with The Curious Case Of The Firecrotch: This Is Why We Don't Write Our Memoirs While Drunk, Ben., which [livejournal.com profile] stratospherique wrote with [livejournal.com profile] apiphile)

And [livejournal.com profile] apiphile has ruined me for Inception. I still haven't seen the movie (yes, I do live under a rock, I think this has previously been established), but Del mentioned earlier that I'm probably going to be disappointed that the movie is not actually wall-to-wall porn. SHE WOULD NOT BE WRONG!

Summer by [livejournal.com profile] apiphile
Inception || 3,100 words || Ariadne/Eames

And speaking of fandoms I'm not in, [livejournal.com profile] harriet_vane wrote Jesse Eisenberg/Andrew Garfield fic. I'm not in TSN RPF fandom! I barely know who Andrew Garfield is!! But this fic is adorable and hysterical and I love it SO MUCH and her Justin is quite possibly my favorite thing about the fic, except that the entire thing is my favorite. (“What you need to do,” said Justin, totally ignoring him, “is send him a naked picture of yourself. That’s how this shit works. I saw it on To Catch A Predator.”)

Don't Carry It All by [livejournal.com profile] harriet_vane
25,000 words of Jesse/Andrew awkwardnes goodness, with a healthy dose of Justin.
It started because Justin decided to set up a dating profile for Jesse against his will.

Also on my flist this week, this awesomely happy-making multi-fandom picspam from [livejournal.com profile] sonicbookmark (who I adore and am going to kidnap so we can run away and get married), several awesome recaps from LA CON from [livejournal.com profile] wendy (complete with pictures!), PatD concert and m&g recaps from [livejournal.com profile] sunsetmog, pictures from [livejournal.com profile] pecos's Asia Adventures, and lots of flailing about Discos and PStump and MF'ing EMPIRES (yall have all gone to vote for them, right?)!

This is totally a happy week!!

Okay, so I have three fics in progress (one for [livejournal.com profile] irisgirl12000 about Baby Belle, since I never sent it to her last week and is technically just a snippet); one for [livejournal.com profile] swear_jar, which I'm going to pretend is her birthday present so as to explain the delay in finishing it; and one for [livejournal.com profile] jackiesjunkie) and a post I wanted to make about my weekend. And I have a shiny new laptop!! I also have a headache, but no one will be surprised to hear that.

Instead of all those things, though, right now I'm going to talk about helping your fellow LJ-ers and also throw out a couple fic recs!

I am selfish enough to put a link to my own stuff first, so if you haven't had a chance to check out my Relay for Life post, please do so. :)

[livejournal.com profile] apiphile has a post here where she is offering words for donations made to [livejournal.com profile] soda_and_capes or [livejournal.com profile] myselftheliar. For details and/or information about what they need donations for, check that post.

[livejournal.com profile] danacias brought this Groupon deal to my attention, and the offer runs through midnight EST tonight, so I'm going to steal part of the post she made about this.

If you're reading this, there is a good chance you know - or know of - [livejournal.com profile] harriet_vane. More specifically, you may know that she teaches at a public school in New York, and that she encourages her students to participate in the book club she runs. Approximately 25 kids are currently signed up, but very few of them can afford to buy the books they collectively decide to read, and the public libraries usually only carry a few copies of a given book, so most of the books the students read are purchased by [livejournal.com profile] harriet_vane or by flisters who are able to pitch in for books.

If you've got $10 available for the book club, the current NYC Super Groupon from Barnes & Noble would actually give the class $20 worth of books. So if their next book is $9.99 each, they could buy two books with one Groupon. So, you know, if you can spare $10 for a Groupon for her class, it would be wildly appreciated. By me, by her, by the kids in the book club. If not, no worries. Really.

Again, here is the link for the current Super Groupon from Barnes & Noble. Basically, you buy the groupon and forward the email confirmation or just the coupon code to [livejournal.com profile] harriet_vane. (of course, if you want to use this groupon for yourself, it's a good deal any way you go)

Background: [livejournal.com profile] harriet_vane teaches high school students (9th - 12th grade) but uses 6th grade textbooks because so few of her students enter her class able to read at proper grade level. She commits a lot of time and effort into creating lesson plans that will motivate her students to do part of their assigned homework, so the fact that she has kids reading harder material in their free time because of her encouragement is kind of amazing.

Now, fic recs:

A Steady Diet of Sodapop and Ritalin by [livejournal.com profile] jmc_bks
GK Brad/Ray AU, ~4400 words
Summary: Brad likes elevator music and musical theater; Ray decides he must be schooled in real music.
I adore this whole AU that J has created, and I am so glad that she is writing fic and sharing it. I love her Brad and Ray - and the mention of Gabe Saporta - and I know she is staying a little under the radar, so I'm hoping that some of you will go read this and leave her some encouraging comments. I promise you'll like it.

The Curious Case Of The Firecrotch: This Is Why We Don't Write Our Memoirs While Drunk, Ben. by [livejournal.com profile] stratospherique and [livejournal.com profile] apiphile
A Fail Noir Adventure
Rated Not Appropriate For All Audiences for swearing, drunken pillow fucking, scandalous histories, and detailed erotic encounters of the homosexual persuasion.
Approximately 22,000 words in length
okay, so I may have had a reaction of a high pitched squee and hand clapping when I saw this. I haven't even started reading yet, but I am so excited to see new fic from these two - I love it when they write together. (not to say I don't love their individual writing as well) I plan on spending my evening curled up with my shiny new laptop reading this.

Okay, I'm going to try to take something else for my headache because I have to start some laundry and stuff before I go pick the boys up from karate. <3
